Aunty "Phine", was a proud and generous woman. She, like Aunty Dorothy, had a natural talent for playing the ukulele and had a beautiful singing voice! She loved her children and moopuna and were proud of them. She was a strict disciplinarian and like Aunty Dorothy, thought nothing of giving your okole a whooping or two! And, she could cook too.
Uncle Jr., always used to compliment Aunty's cooking and one of the last things he told me, when Aunty was gravely ill and hospitalized, was that, he missed her cooking and grumbling. And that, with Aunty away, he lost weight, because, he could eat only her food and he missed her.
Her son Lloyd, gave a wonderful tribute and eulogy to his mom. Aunty's grandson sang beautiful hymnals and Hawaiian songs that were favorites of his grandma's. Other family members and church members sang in her honor. Several of her grandchildren paid tributes to their grandma, by either speaking from their hearts for their appreciation and love for her, or in the meanings of songs they had sung, or hula, they had danced.
With her parting, she has left a void in their hearts as evident in the heartfelt sadness and tears at her memorial services, especially by her moopuna. Aunty Phine was spiritual and accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior. Her beliefs of the assurance of a spiritual life, is death not being an end, but a transformation, brought her peace in hope---as she was nearing the end of her life on earth. May we also, find peace in hope. `Til we will meet again, Aunty Phine, know that you were loved and will be missed.

In Loving Memory of
Dorothy Kuulei Kanahele Mawae
March 11, 1925 - January 15, 2008
Dorothy Kuulei Kanahele Mawae, age 82, died on January 15, 2008. Wake and funeral services were held at Steele Chapel in Longview, Washington on January 19 and at Borthwick's Makai Chapel, in Honolulu, Oahu, on January 25, 2008. Internment was at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, at Punchbowl, in Honolulu, where Aunty was laid to rest, alongside her husband, Jonah Mawae.
Cousin Sarah Reinhardt Canto and her daughter Kelsey, my sister, Sing and I, attended Aunty's services on behalf of our mother, Hannah and Sarah's father, George, Mom's brother and our Maui ohana. Aunty, was their first cousin [Aunty's father, Thomas, and our parents mother, Sarah Kaniuhele Reinhardt, were brother and sister].
A touching eulogy was given by Tutu's grandson, Hale Mawae. He also read a poem, penned by his older brother that epitomized their grandmother the best. It was poignant and bittersweet---words befitting their Tutu, Kumu, Mom, Aunty, Cousin and dear friend. She will be missed, as she was the heart and soul of their family and their lives! She was rarely seen without a ukulele close by and enjoyed life. Some of our fondest memories of Aunty, was her infectious smile and flowers in her hair! And, she was very proud of her children and their accomplishments!
After the grave side services, we gathered for lunch at Fanny Hopeau's home, Aunty's niece. We met cousins we haven't seen since our hanabuttah days, or cousins we had only heard about and never had the pleasure of meeting until now. We also met their families and other extended families. Under somber circumstances, we managed to have a nice time. Someday, we hope to plan a reunion, so the rest of the Kaniuhele and Kanahele ohana can rekindle their kinship.
The greatest legacy Aunty Dorothy has blessed us with, is the presence of her children, moopuna and ohana, among us.....`Til we meet again, aloha, Aunty.
